Tubing in Northern Michigan

Although we as summer camp counselors have busy weeks working with kids, we also do have some time off to have fun on our own. Our most recent day off was spent tubing down a river, which is honestly one of my very favorite ways to spend a summer day. Floating down the river with a drink in hand and great friends by your side makes for a lovely afternoon. Besides it is a great way to spend some quality time really enjoying the great outdoors!

We rented our tubes through Big Bear Adventures in Indian River. The river we tubed down is the Sturgeon River, the fastest moving river in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The company is great; I even recognized some staff from previous years going. They also offer kayaks and canoes all for a reasonable price. We chose to do the longer trip for tubing – approximately 2.5 hours, but they also have a shorter option – approximately 1.5 hours.

The staff pictured above in addition to the other 70-some members of staff are just beginning to become a family. I love all aspects of working at a summer camp, but I think it is the staff that really keeps bringing me back. I have made amazing connections with people around the world that people who are involved in my daily life just can’t not begin to understand.

….and some action shots (just for fun!)
