The Castelo de São Jorge is located in the heart of Lisbon, Portugal up on an elevated area of the city. We took one of the well-known cable cars up to the castle and walked the remainder of the way up the steep, slanted sidewalks. Upon entering the castle area, you are greeted with an open plaza and a beautiful view over looking the city (pictured above).
You are able to freely roam through the courtyard, pathways, stairs, and up onto the roofs. The views from the tops of the buildings are again beautiful. Some of the pathways on top of the castle are thin with short walls, and it is a long way down. Some people were a little freaked out about this, but I love the fact that they did not add additional guard rails. In Europe, there seems to be much fewer obvious building codes than in the US.
In addition to the beautiful views and the castle, there are peacocks running around the courtyards and in the trees. I was also very lucky that the day I visited was gorgeous!
