Somehow, I was lucky enough to win two Red Wings suite tickets to the game on March 14th. I won them at the Red Ox Tavern on Superbowl Sunday in a free raffle. Needless to say I took my roommate, who also had never been to a Wings game before. I was extremely excited for the game since I have never been to a game, and the Red Wing’s Justin Abdelkader went to my high school.
Because we had suite tickets, we got to take a special elevator to the upper level floors. As we walked by the suites, our anticipation for the game grew. Finally we reached suite 44, which happened to be the Party Deck. In the Party Deck Suite, we were served food and unlimited beer – how could it get any better!? We were greeted by the guy hosting the suite, who was a Miller Lite representative.
We grabbed some food and beer, then chose some seats in the very front of the suite. It is a good thing neither of us has vertigo; there was a great view overlooking the rest of the stadium seating and the rink. The game started out with the signing of the National Anthem and O’Canada. I was highly impressed by the atmosphere in the stadium during the signing of these songs; there was a feeling of unity among the crowd.
It was a great game. At the end of the first period and going into the third period, the Red Wings were up by 1 point. The Oilers scored a goal during the third, tying up the game. It went into overtime and then a shootout. Both teams’ first two players missed their shots. Tomas Tatar from the Red Wings scored the winning goal in the shootout – for a Red Wings win!!
